September Fun

Well, the first month just flew by. We started the year with record high temperatures then had a week of rainy weather. But now we are just the right weather for being outside. This first month was spent getting to know each other and building relationships. It is so fun to start to see the personalities come out. As the relationship I have with the students progress, they start to feel safe around me and are able to be themselves. At first I was worried we wouldn’t have much chance for conflict management, but I’m happy to say that we have had some great opportunities. This is important work we are doing here at school, learning how to get along with others. We were also able to highlight the letter A as we explored apples. We even made and ate applesauce! There have also been plenty of chances to work on pre writing skills. These opportunities are so important because writing requires the whole body to be ready. At this age, working on the core large motor skills are so important. Here is a good article if you are interested in learning more. https://empoweredparents.co/pre-writing-activities/

And here at our school, writing happens organically and when the students are interested. There is no need to schedule a time, writing materials are always available. Here’s just one example of how it looks like here. This was at our outside kitchen/restaurant. This little girl was writing down what she wanted to eat.

Here are some other highlights from the rest of September. So much learning going on and so much fun happening.
